Overcome your Craving for Chocolate with Hypnotherapy
I am writing this during the Easter Holidays while eating the last of my rather yummy chocolate egg. Any excuse to eat chocolate! I am sure I am not alone in thinking I probably eat too much chocolate but how much is too much and when does it become a problem?
Can you really become addicted to chocolate?
According to research** eating chocolate can trigger an addiction like ‘high’. This research is controversial and has been questioned but what is not in doubt is that some people find it very difficult to stop eating chocolate.
If you are one of those people it doesn’t really matter about the debate over if it is addictive or not – you just want to eat less or perhaps none at all.
Some people do crave chocolate. You know if you have a problem, for example: If one bar is never enough, you are eating and not enjoying the experience, panic if you do not have a ‘stash’ of chocolate or you are hiding your chocolate consumption from others then you have a problem with chocolate.
Breaking the chocolate craving can be very difficult. But there are ways you can do this. They include going cold turkey, cutting down, following a diet plan and consulting a hypnotherapist*.
Why is chocolate such a problem
Chocolate contains both fat and sugar both of which are essential to our diet. Unfortunately, both these food types trigger pleasure sensations in our brains. As well as this, chocolate has a pleasing texture making it easy to eat.
Most chocolate on the market today does not contain a very high concentration of cocoa. With the exception of chocolate with a high (70-90%) cacao ratio. It is usually made up of hydrogenated fats and processed sugar. Neither of which are good for us in a large amount.
What are the problems associated with eating too much chocolate?
As most of the chocolate we eat is made up of sugar and fat, eating it in excess has a number of health issues related to it.
- Tooth decay
- Sweating and heart rate increase
- Bad complexion – spots
It can also lead to:
- Over spending
- Stop you from actually enjoying it
How to stop binging
There are a number of methods you can use to bring you chocolate consumption down.
- Eat mindfully – enjoy each mouthful
- Stop and think before you eat it – do I really want it?
- Wait 10 minutes before eating it and see if you still want it.
- Brush your teeth after eating to stop the craving for chocolate after a meal.
- Eat only dark chocolate containing at least 70% cacao.
- Cut down all sugar intake (see article on sugar addiction).
- Ban it from the house and don’t buy it.
- Eat fruit instead of chocolate.
- Eat only in moderation one piece at a time.
- Find a hypnotherapist to help with your addiction
How Clevedon Hypnosis can help your problem with chocolate
With any eating issues there is usually an emotional problem hiding in the background. Hypnotherapy can be very good at treating chocolate addiction. It works by finding out the reasons for overeating chocolate – boredom, loneliness or stress.
Hypnotherapy works by working directly with the unconscious to override conscious desires. It helps identify the mental blocks that keep you eating chocolate. Then replaces the negative reasons for eating chocolate with positive alternatives. This way you change the way you think about chocolate so you no longer have the same craving*.
At Clevedon hypnotherapy I can help people with chocolate addiction to get their chocolate intake under control using a range of techniques.* Including hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro Linguistic Programing (NLP).
This treatment also works for other food addictions such as crisps, sweets, biscuits or junk food.
Treatment can take a number of sessions (usually around 4) depending on your personal needs and requirements.
