How Hypnotherapy can help your fears of public speaking
Public speaking, giving presentations or just speaking up in a meeting can be terrifying for some of us. Just thinking about it can start people worrying. So what is it that is so frightening about getting up and speaking to a room full of people?
If you are scared of speaking in public then you are not alone. It is one of the most common fears and phobias we have. The problem is that when we are afraid our bodies go into ‘fight or flight’ response – and fear is what a lot of people feel at the thought of speaking in public. The means our body responds by going into attack mode. Our heart rate rises and we are hyper aware and our rational mind is disengaged. In this state we are unlikely to be able to perform at our best.
Just some of the symptoms we can experience when we have to speaking in public are:
- Heart beating faster
- Dry throat
- Mental block
- Trembling voice
Why is speaking in public so scary?
When you get up in front of a group of people – it could be 3 or 4 or a hundred – you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position. Everyone is looking at you waiting for you to speak and you don’t necessarily know what they are expecting from you. So unless you are one of those people who thrives on being the centre of attention then it is bound to be frightening if you are not used to it.
There can be a number of reasons why we feel afraid of getting up and speaking in public.
- Fear of going blank, stuttering or looking a fool
- Low self-esteem or confidence
- Fear of being judged
- Fear of being the centre of attention
How Hypnotherapy can help
Hypnotherapy can help with fear of public speaking by teaching the speaker ways to neutralise our fight or flight response by relaxation. If we are relaxed then we cannot feel afraid. The therapist will also help you with confidence building so you feel you can talk in public. You will also learn ways of dealing with side effects such as sweating or blushing if they occur as your hypnotherapist will help you to be less anxious.
