Treating Sleeping Problems with Hypnotherapy
Everyone suffers the occasional sleepless night but when you experience night after night with very little sleep it can become very stressful. Losing the odd night’s sleep won’t do any harm but prolonged lack of sleep can be bad for our overall health both physically and mentally.
What is a sleep disorder and why is it a problem?
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and is defined as a habitual lack of sleep. Estimates put around a third of people in the UK will suffer from insomnia at some point in their life. But the phrase ‘Sleep Disorder’ can cover numerous problems related to sleeping.
These fall into the following categories:
- Inability to get off to sleep
- Waking during the night
- Bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Night terrors
- Restless leg syndrome
- Bed wetting
Sleep is essential to our survival. When we are asleep our bodies are healing, and repairing cells and our minds are processing information, sifting out what we need and what we don’t. Surprisingly, our brains are very active while we are sleeping performing essential tasks.
What causes sleeplessness
Short term reasons for sleeplessness are usually caused by our mind being preoccupied with an event such as moving to a new house, starting a new job, an important interview or worrying about yourself or others. These don’t necessarily have to be bad events, they could just as easily be joyful events you are looking forward to such as a holiday, wedding or other reason for celebration.
If you have problems sleeping not only is it frustrating and leaves you tired and unable to concentrate, but can also lead to long term health problems.
Effects of lack of sleep:
- Anxiety and depression
- Lack of concentration
- Low energy levels
How Clevedon Hypnosis can help
Most people will have problems sleeping at some point in their lives, although it should not last for longer than a few days or at the most a week or so. But if you are finding sleeping difficult in the long term, then hypnosis can help. It does this by getting to the root of your problem and pinpointing the reasons you are kept awake or wake during the night.
Hypnotherapy works by changing the negative thought patterns that contribute to insomnia. It can also help improve your sleep patterns by teaching you how to relax and shut off those continual thoughts that go through your head. *
Treatment will depend on the type of disorder and the person involved. It will include teaching you self-hypnosis so you can treat yourself at home and during any further times you are having difficulties sleeping.
At Clevedon Hypnosis, I can help you if you are having problems getting to sleep or waking early. Other issues that can be helped are Bruxism, which involves grinding your teeth at night, sleepwalking and bed wetting. If you are experiencing problems sleeping it is advisable to contact your GP to make sure there are no medical reasons you can’t sleep before seeing a hypnotherapist.
