Help coping with pain in Clevedon with Hypnosis
Hypnosis has been used for centuries for pain control long before anaesthetics were discovered. Anaesthetics were discovered in the eighteenth century but were not used until 1877. Before that herbs, alcohol and narcotics were used along with hypnosis, which was often looked down on as charlatanism.
There are a number of studies that have been made that prove hypnosis can help with the treatment of chronic pain. If you have ever suffered from any prolonged periods of pain then you will be aware of just how debilitating it can be. Whether your problem is caused by an injury, long term illness or has no apparent cause*.
What is pain?
There are two types of pain acute and chronic.
- Acute pain is pain caused by a specific injury or disease and lasts a short time
- Chronic pain is pain lasting longer than 6 months
How hypnotherapy helps manage pain
Pain is influenced by psychological issues – you can forget pain when you are busy or distracted from it. This does not mean that the pain isn’t there or that you are imagining it. Hypnosis isn’t about making you believe that you don’t have any pain. It is about helping you deal with the fear and anxiety surrounding the pain. It will help you with relaxation and taking your mind off the pain by redirecting it elsewhere*.
Hypnotherapy can be used alongside painkillers and physiotherapy and moderate exercise It is used to reduce discomfort and sometimes eliminate pain altogether. Here is a list of some of the conditions that can be treated, this is not exhaustive so please contact me if you require help for other types of pain*.
