Seasonal Affective Disorder and Hypnotherapy

Are you SAD when the clocks go back?

It is that time of year again when the clocks go back and the days seems very short as it is dark at 4.00 in the afternoon.  You can leave for work in the dark and return home in the dark, hardly seeing any sunlight at all. Most of us find this a little bit depressing.

Around a fifth of the population find the winter months challenging. But for 2% of the population when the clocks go back it makes them more than just a bit unhappy, it can be a serious problem.

What is SAD?

Seasonal Affective Disorder or the Winter Blues as it is also known, is a medically recognised condition.  SAD is a form of depression which affects people at the same time every year. Usually during the autumn and winter months and is especially noticeable when the clocks go back at the end of October.

Causes of SAD are uncertain but the depression may be linked to changes in the production of melatonin and a drop in serotonin levels due to the change of season. Changes in our body clock caused by lack of sunlight may also play a part.

Symptoms of SAD include:

  • Low mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Problems sleeping or oversleeping
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Lethargy
  • Stress and anxiety

The depressive feelings then disappear in the spring.

(Some people suffer from SAD but are depressed in the spring and summer and happy in the autumn and winter but it is usually the other way around.)

If you suffer from depression during the winter months there are several ways to ease the misery.

  • Try to spend time outside in the daylight whenever possible
  • Keep regular hours
  • Ensure you have a healthy diet
  • Light therapy
  • Buy a lightbox
  • Visit a hypnotherapist
  • Live in another country during winter!

How Clevedon Hypnosis can help?

Hypnotherapy can help you to combat winter depression and, you never know, you may even start to enjoy the winter weather and colder seasons as part of the ever changing annual cycle instead enduring of 6 months of misery.*

Hypnotherapy can be successful at treating mild to moderate depression.  It helps by addressing the person as a whole, rather than just the symptoms. I work by combining practical exercises and hypnosis.  I will also teach you self-hypnosis and provide recordings for you to listen to while you are at home.

Patterns of behaviour are leant so therefore we repeat past behaviour responses. Hypnosis helps break the cycle of depression and change patterns of negative behaviour you can change the way you feel.  When we have positive happy thoughts then more serotonin is produced and we feel even better.

If you are suffering from SAD then do not suffer in silence.
