But when it becomes more than just an occasional annoyance, it can affect all aspects of your life, crushing your spirit and even making you ill.

Negative thinking with inner critic

What is negative thinking?

The inner critic is responsible for most of our negative thinking. The incessant voice in your head, a relentless critic, berates your actions and chips away at your self-esteem, leaving you feeling inadequate.

Negative thoughts worsen anxiety and depression, making it harder to cope with life’s difficulties. This constant self-criticism can lead to consistent avoidance of opportunities, a struggle to celebrate achievements because of an immediate focus on flaws, and an overall feeling of mental exhaustion that pervades your daily life.

Common negative thought patterns and their impact

      • Catastrophising – assuming the worst will happen.
      • Self-blame – holding yourself responsible for things beyond your control.
      • Black and white thinking – everything is good or bad.
      • ‘Should’ statements – Self-reproach after making mistakes.
      • Negative filter -focusing on the negative and refusing to see the positive.
      • Overgeneralisation – taking one negative experience and apply it to everything.
      • Name calling – self-directed insults following mistakes.

The Impact of Negative Thoughts on Mental Health

Negative thoughts, which are both a symptom and a cause of psychological distress profoundly affected mental health. Allowing negative thoughts to dominate the mind creates a self-reinforcing loop potentially resulting in or worsening anxiety and depression.

How the brain creates cycles of negativity

Repetitive negative thinking isn’t just a mental habit; it physically alters the brain, strengthening negative pathways and impairing cognitive and emotional function.

Traditional approaches frequently fail to create lasting change because they primarily target the conscious mind, overlooking the subconscious where the majority (95%) of mental activity lives. Therefore, merely “trying to think positive” usually proves ineffective for persistent negative thoughts.

Why is negative thinking so destructive?

Negative thoughts warp our view of reality, harming mood, motivation, and actions, which is why they are so destructive. It fuels anxiety, depression, and self-doubt, hindering our ability to take risks and pursue goals. Constant negativity erodes self-esteem, leading to isolation and strained relationships. It impairs problem-solving skills, focusing on obstacles rather than solutions.

Signs your inner critic is holding you back

    • Constant self-doubt by questioning your abilities.
    • Avoiding challenges because of fear of failure.
    • Obsessively comparing yourself to others.
    • Procrastination until you achieve unattainable standards.
    • Downplaying your successes and ignoring positive feedback.
    • Dwelling on past mistakes which hinders your progress.

Understanding Your Inner Critic

Our inner critic evolved as a way of protecting us from perceived threats and failure. It’s shaped in our formative years by past experiences, critical feedback, and internal societal expectations. Unfortunately, it can be overactive and unhelpful in modern times.

How Hypnotherapy can help increase confidence

We can often be our own worst critic with that little voice inside our head telling us we are not as good as we should be. This voice often exaggerates our weaknesses while ignoring our strengths. It tells us we are stupid, ugly, boring, or these and sets us up for failure.

Hypnosis for discovering self-confidence

Working with a hypnotherapist allows you to access the subconscious mind to make positive changes. It does this by using the power of suggestion to stop those negative thoughts from holding you back. Hypnotherapy utilises the confidence you already possess that a past event has affected. You already have some skills to help yourself. You just need to know how to identify and use these skills.

You can use hypnotherapy for general confidence building or specific problem such as:

    • Public speaking
    • Acting
    • Networking
    • Exams or Driving Test

Hypnosis won’t magically transform you into a different person. Although it can be very helpful in helping you become the person you want to be, it cannot change your personality. It is impossible to become someone you are not.

You will also need to put in some effort. You can make changes relatively quickly, but you must be prepared to work at reinforcing what you want to change.

Here are a few ways to overcome negative thinking patterns:

Z

Be kind to yourself

Cultivate self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness, concern, and understanding that you would offer a close friend. Positive affirmations, such as silently reciting “I am worthy” or “I am enough,” are a great way to boost your confidence and self-worth.

Z

Journal your negative thoughts

Write down your thoughts to identify negative patterns. This allows you to recognise the exact circumstances and the sensory details (sights, sounds, smells etc.) that set you off. This will allow you to make positive changes to your thinking.

Z

Confront your inner critic

Confronting your inner critic involves recognising negative self-talk, challenging its validity, and reframing thoughts. Ask yourself, Is it based on fact or emotion and is it true? Is this thought helpful? Turn the negative statements into positive and realistic ones.

FAQs about hypnotherapy for negative thinking

What is hypnotherapy and how does it work for low confidence?

Hypnotherapy can be a wonderful tool in helping you increase your confidence. It provides a safe and supportive environment to explore what is holding you back to develop a more positive self-image, ultimately leading to increased confidence.

It uses guided relaxation and focused attention, allowing users to access their subconscious minds. This allows for addressing the root causes of low confidence, such as negative self-talk, limiting beliefs, and experiences, and replacing them with positive suggestions and empowering beliefs.

Are the effects of hypnotherapy for confidence and self-esteem permanent?

The effects can be long-lasting, especially when combined with other self-improvement techniques. However, to keep the positive changes, continued practice and regular reinforcement will increase long-term success.

Are there any risks associated with hypnotherapy for self-confidence?

Most anxieties surrounding hypnosis originate from its portrayal on TV. Where evil villains use hypnosis to coerce people into criminal acts. This is not realistic. You are always in control: your hypnotherapist can’t force you to do anything against your will.

Can hypnotherapy help with specific confidence issues, such as public speaking or social anxiety?

Yes, hypnotherapy can be tailored to address specific confidence-related issues, including public speaking fears and social anxiety, as well as insecurity and jealousy.

Can you guarantee it will work?

Hypnotherapy can be very effective for helping increase self-confidence, boosting self-esteem, and improving one’s overall sense of self-worth. I’ve found considerable success treating this problem; it’s the one I encounter most often in my practice. Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee any treatment as everyone is reacts differently. I promise to give 100% and if you match that commitment, we should succeed.

What happens during a session?

The first session begins with a careful assessment of your needs, followed by a discussion about your treatment goals. Then, a standard hypnotherapy session typically starts with a confidence-building exercise offering practical tools and techniques. This is followed by a relaxing hypnotherapy session which will focus on a specific issue that is holding you back.

How many sessions will I need?

It all depends on your circumstances. The number of sessions varies depending on the individual and the complexity of the issues. Positive changes may appear quickly for some, while others may need more sessions. I usually recommend five sessions. Your initial session will assess needs; following sessions focus on solutions.
