Break free from bad habits with Hypnotherapy

Finally, Make Habits Stick with the Power of Your Subconscious

Many people have ingrained habits—nail-biting, perhaps, or endlessly checking their phones—that they despise and long to break free from. These repetitive behaviours—nail biting, hair fiddling, finger picking, eyelash pulling, and the constant scratching—reveal underlying anxiety.

But it isn’t just physical habits that can be frustrating. Some also struggle with problems like excessive social media use, procrastination, self-sabotage and shopping addictions, which they desperately want to change. The severity of these problems varies widely, from minor annoyances that barely register to major crises that can profoundly affect your life.

Why is it that bad habits are easy to maintain, yet creating positive ones is so difficult?

We easily fall into bad habits because they come naturally, providing quick rewards, unlike good habits, which take time and offer delayed gratification.

Take junk food, for example. Simple to prepare or grab ready-made, it delivers instant satisfaction. That’s precisely its intended purpose. Food companies invest millions in creating addictively textured and flavoured foods.

Understanding the cycle of bad habits

Bad habits aren’t a sign of personal failings, like laziness. We are naturally predisposed to developing habits. Learning to drive or dance and even a language are habits too.

So, what is a habit?

If you type that question into a search engine, the answer you get is: “An action that you do regularly, often without thinking about it.”

Habits can be good or bad depending on whether they have a positive or negative effect on our life. Unfortunately, even though most behaviour can be turned into a habit, those that come easily tend to be the ones that are bad for us.

Understanding the habit cycle requires recognising its repetitive three-part loop: cue, routine, and reward.

  • The cue is the trigger that sets the habit off. It doesn’t have to be because you are unhappy or stressed. For example, smoking after a meal.
  • The routine is the behaviour or action that makes up the habit. For example, biting your nails or putting off a task.
  • The reward is the benefit that reinforces the habit. This could be pleasure or the reduction of pain. For example, putting off exercise because of the perceived discomfort.

Recognising this cycle lets people identify and change what keeps their bad habits going. Recognising unhealthy habit triggers and finding positive, similarly rewarding alternatives helps individuals break the cycle and build healthier habits. Hypnotherapy and similar methods can help by targeting subconscious links to the habit and creating positive new patterns.

How Hypnotherapy can help you create better habits

Hypnotherapy offers a powerful approach to breaking free from unwanted habits by accessing the subconscious mind, where our deeply ingrained patterns and behaviours live. Hypnosis induces a naturally relaxed and focused state of mind, making you more open to positive suggestions and new thought patterns.

Using guided sessions, hypnotherapy helps you discover the underlying reasons for your bad habits, including emotional triggers, learned behaviours and coping strategies. By tackling these underlying issues, we can retrain our brains to respond more healthily to familiar triggers.

The process works by strengthening your natural ability to make positive choices while weakening the hold of unwanted habits.

Hypnotherapy helping habits such as nail biting. Clevedon

Through repeated sessions, new behavioural patterns become automatic, replacing old habits with beneficial ones.

This approach is effective because it aligns your conscious desires with your subconscious programming, creating lasting change that feels natural and sustainable.

With hypnotherapy, you’re not just breaking bad habits; you’re reprogramming your subconscious mind, leading to lasting change.

Here are just a few ways you can help yourself develop better habits:

Start Small

Begin with something that will be easy to implement. That won’t take long or be difficult, and will give you the confidence you need.

Z

Habit Swapping

Substitute a bad habit with a positive one. Instead of watching TV late into the night. Go to bed and read a book for half an hour.

Z

Own your Failure

There will be times when you fail. That is ok. Don’t give up. You don’t get only one chance at this. Start again and stay positive.
